Corsicana — Navarro County AARP Chapter 4653 will meet at 2 p.m. at Northwest Apartments Community Room, 1360 N. 13th St., Corsicana. A musical program will be presented. Guests are always welcomed. Feb. 28

Relay for Life team “Sugar Rush for a Cure” will hold a Lunch Time Special at Super 1 Foods, 100 N. 15th St., from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Taco Soup and a drink with all the trimmings will be sold for $6, with sweet treats available for purchase as well. All proceeds of this fundraiser toward Relay for Life. For more information contact Amanda Spear or Lois Garrett at (903) 872-9300.

March 1

The Republican Party of Navarro County will hold an Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Republican Headquarters at 111-B West Third Avenue in downtown Corsicana. Voters can pick-up free yard signs and campaign materials. Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about the election.

March 3

Piecemakers' Quilt Guild of Corsicana  meets on the first Monday of every month at 9:30 a.m. Each meeting starts with refreshments and a time to visit with other members and visitors. A short business meeting starts at 10 a.m., followed by door prizes and show and tell. This month's program features a member of our guild, Susan Copeland demonstrating sewing fabric post cards with a workshop following program. Visitors are welcome to come and join us. Meeting is at the Westhill Church of Christ fellowship hall.

VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Site open from 2 until 7 p.m. to assist the elderly and low income file their tax returns at the Corsicana YMCA. To schedule an appointment, call  281-682-0928.

Southern Pacific Sunbeam Club will meet for food, fun and fellowship for members and friends of the railroad. Mark your calendar for an 11:30 a.m. Dutch lunch date at the Ennis IHOP. Bring your ideas for the April reunion.

    Lacy Rose Goodrich, 9, is a typical Bowie fourth-grader. She likes to watch “Full House,” reruns and “iCarly,” and she has a dog and a cat. She takes gymnastics and dance lessons, and has attended four different Vacation Bible Schools this summer, as well as all the parks and recreation summer programs for kids.
    What’s unusual about Lacy is that she also raised nearly $500 for the food pantry since Easter, which is the equivalent of 3,450 pounds of food for hungry Navarro County residents.

    The jury called for Aug. 4 at 8:30 a.m. District Court, Judge James Lagomarsino has been dismissed.

    Water rates, sewer rates and trash rates will all go up for Corsicana city residents, according to preliminary budget figures presented to the city council Thursday afternoon.

  • City cancels ambulance contract with county

    The City of Corsicana has notified Navarro County officials it is cancelling its agreement with the county to provide EMS ambulance service to areas outside the city limits. According to a letter sent to county officials by Corsicana Mayor Chuck McClanahan, ambulance service to county residents will end on Jan. 31, 2015.

    The project to rebuild Seventh Avenue or Highway 31 as it goes through Corsicana is almost over. From an uneven patchwork of paving and pitted concrete, now it’s a smooth ride from Beaton all the way through town.
    It just took an extra year to finish.

    An attempt to bootleg electricity off a pole using jumper cables is believed to have caused a building fire that took out a former restaurant in Angus Friday morning, one of a series of calls to Navarro County Sheriff’s Office to the southern end of the county over the weekend.
