Fire destroys county home

Corsicana — A family that includes a current and former volunteer firefighter safely escaped a fire Tuesday that heavily damaged their home on Navarro Mills Lake.

Firefighters from several volunteer agencies and the Corsicana Fire Department responded to the fire on FM 709 north of the Dawson area shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday. The first units arriving on the scene reported heavy smoke showing from the structure.

The fire is believed to have started in a bedroom in the home, said Randy Suddeth, who lives in the home along with his parents, Gene and Addele. Randy is a current member of the Dawson Volunteer Fire Department; his father Gene was a longtime volunteer before retiring. He said he wasn't sure what started the blaze.

“It started in an upstairs bedroom is all I know,” Randy Suddeth said. “I was the one that discovered it. We got my parents and the dog out.”

Fire heavily damaged the home that sits on the shores of Navarro Mills Lake. At least one vehicle was destroyed by the blaze as well.

Despite strong, gusty winds that whipped across the area Tuesday, firefighters were able to contain the blaze and keep it from spreading to nearby homes and fields.

The American Red Cross also responded to the fire scene with its mobile relief station, providing supplies and refreshments to firefighters working the incident.
