Corsicana Daily Sun
The Corsicana Daily Sun received a first place award Saturday in the Texas Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest.
The Daily Sun won first place in the “General Excellence” category for daily newspapers with a circulation of 7,000 or less.
Criteria for the award includes excellence in overall news coverage, quality of writing, composition and display, headlines, use of photos and art work, front page and specialty pages including editorial, life, social and sports pages.
Winners were announced Saturday at a ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Houston during the Texas Press Association’s Leadership Retreat.
Managing Editor Bob Belcher represented the Daily Sun at the ceremony in Houston to accept the award on behalf of the newspaper staff and management.
The Daily Sun also received a fourth place award for feature writing. Two stories were mentioned by competition judges in their analysis of the category — a feature by Belcher about former Corsicana radio personality Alan Barnes and his successful lifestyle transformation through weight loss surgery, and a feature by City Editor Janet Jacobs on the 2012 reunion of the former residents of the Corsicana State Home.
Another CNHI publication, the Athens Daily Review, was also honored at Saturday’s awards ceremony with several awards, including first place finishes in special sections for its annual football magazine, sports photography, sports reporting, opinion columns, and page design. The Athens Daily Review also received the “Sweepstakes Award” for its multiple first-place category awards.
There were over 1,500 entries from 148 daily and weekly newspapers in the 2013 competition, sponsored annually by the Texas Press Association. Judging of the entries was conducted by member newspapers of the Arkansas Press Association.
