Jessup honored as 'Volunteer of Year'

Corsicana — Steve Jessup of Corsicana has been named State Senate District 22 Republican Volunteer Of The Year by State Republican Executive Committee members Janet Jackson and Frank Steed.

Jessup, a longtime leader and member of the Republican Party of Navarro County, was recognized for his involvement in the 2012 campaign. Jessup, along with the other 30 State Senate District Volunteers of the Year, were honored by the Republican Party Of Texas on Friday in Austin. State Senate District 22 consists of 10  counties surrounding Waco.

“I have accepted this award on behalf of all the Republican Party Of Navarro County and State Senate District 22 volunteers, who have worked so hard to elect public officials who share our conservative values for a more responsible and efficient government,” Jessup said. “It takes a group effort.”

The day began with a chartered tour of the Governor’s Mansion and State Capitol building, along with the House Speaker’s apartment and Lieutenant Governor’s reception area. Following dinner at the Austin Club with Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst as the speaker, each State Senate District volunteer honoree was recognized individually with their bio read from the podium. State Party Chair Steve Munisteri and Lt. Gov. Dewhurst presented each volunteer chosen with certificates and awards.

“When I was asked to lead a Precinct Meeting after the Primary Election in 1990, I was simply trying to help,” said Jessup. “Since then, I have desired to make a difference by connecting with voters, communicating candidate information & local events to them, and meeting needs to allow people to have a greater voice in their government.”

When Jessup started, there were no elected Republicans at the Navarro County Courthouse. Today, due to the growth of the local party, they hold all the elected offices.

“I am grateful for emphasis the Republican Party Of Texas and statewide elected officials have placed upon volunteerism,” said Jessup.

While participating in the festivities, Jessup spoke with House Speaker Joe Straus and Lt. Gov. Dewhurst regarding the status of the Corsicana Residential Treatment Center, however no decision has been made yet.
