College Board Meeting Briefs

Consent Agenda OK’d

The Navarro College Board of Trustees approved the minutes of the May 16, 2013 meeting

Tax Abatement for Water Park

City Manager Connie Standridge and councilman John McClung made a presentation regarding the proposed new water park at Hwy. 287 and Interstate 45 (near Denny’s) and requested a 10-year, 50 percent tax abatement from Navarro College.  The board approved the request.

Tax Abatement for Guardian Industries

Kurt Christian of Guardian Industries requested a tax abatement for a new high volume fabrication line being put in at Guardian, which will employ 20 people. His request was also for a 10-year, 50 percent abatement. The board granted the request.

Item postponed to July meeting

A move to adopt a $1 increase in Out-of-District fees was tabled until the July meeting.

Update on Navarro College Police Academy

Jason Westmoreland, coordinator of the Navarro College Police Academy, gave an update on enrollment, which is steady on both Corsicana and Waxahachie campuses. In 2012 and 2013 the academy boasts a 100 percent first attempt pass rate on the police officers exam.

New Faces

Marcy Ballew gave a presentation on those who have retired or are leaving Navarro College, as well as new employees, and reassigned employees.

President’s Report

Dewayne Gragg went over calendar items for the summer, including the July 1 start date for new college district president Dr. Barbara Kavalier. Enrollment for contact hours for Summer I session showed a slight increase, while Summer II session shows a slight decrease at this time, which Gragg expects to increase before the session begins. For Fall there is an anticipated 3 percent increase in enrollment.

Waxahachie Construction project

Dr. Sanchez narrated photos of the new construction for classrooms going on currently at the Waxahachie campus.

Legislative news

Dr. Sanchez said there was no change in legislation to report.

Budget workshop

There will be a budget workshop on July 18. Dr. Sanchez assured the board the budget would be balanced by early July.
