1:20 p.m. Update: TxDOT, DPS to shift Interstate traffic

Corsicana — As a result of the crash and possible chemical spill on northbound Interstate 45 near Rice, TxDOT and DPS will be diverting northbound Interstate 45 traffic to the southbound service road.

The crash occurred about 11:45 a.m. on northbound I-45 near the 238 mile marker, when an 18 wheeler crashed into a construction work truck. No construction workers were hurt in the crash.

Southbound lanes were re-opened shortly after 1 p.m. Troopers and TxDOT personnel are directing northbound traffic to the southbound service road to continue northbound travel past the crash site.

TxDot area engineer Darwin Myers said anybody in town intending to go north on 45, best thing they can do is go out Beaton to Emhouse Road and follow all way to Emhouse and then when get to Emhouse, turn right on FM 1126 and follow to I-45.

"That's going to be best bet for rest of the day," Meyers said.

Meyers said the spilled chemical is a powder, and it's likely to take several hours to clear the crash site.

"It can't just be swept off the roadway," he said.

The driver of an 18-wheeler that crashed into a work crew truck was taken by ambulance to Navarro Regional Hospital, after air ambulance crews said they could not transport him due to possible chemical contamination.

DPS spokesman Brad Fulton identified the chemical involved as potassium metal alloy. Local HazMat crews are still working the scene in an attempt to confirm.
