A program offering rebates to help pay for the installation of “safe rooms” to seek shelter from storms is offering Navarro County residents a chance to join a waiting list to participate in the offer.
That chance is one night only — starting at 7 p.m.Thursday, June 27, by visiting the website www.nctsaferoom.com to link to the waiting list application.
The “Metro Safe Room” rebate program of the North Central Texas Council of Governments launched earlier this year in four metroplex counties, but the agency had to close the application process after it was flooded with requests for a rebate of up to $3,000 being offered to homeowners wanting to install shelters or “safe rooms” with the program’s assistance.
The Council of Governments then expanded the program to a 16-county area that includes Navarro County to establish a “waiting list” for homeowners with an interest in the program, should more funds become available to again offer the rebates.
Those wishing to participate should funds again become available must be living in or building a home within the 16-county area; must be the homeowner; not living within a 100-year floodplain; and are required to use a certified supplier. Pre-approval is required, since the program is not retroactive and will not supply a rebate for the costs of a previously installed shelter or safe room.
Materials on the program’s website say it could take up to 18 months before those on the waiting list may be contacted for more information on submitting an application, based on the availability of funding through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
