Corsicana — The Corsicana Independent School District received some good news this week from the Texas Education Agency.

The CISD’s Pre-Kindergarten programs at both Carroll Elementary and Sam Houston Elementary have been identified as “Pre-K Centers of Excellence” by the state agency.

The TEA, in partnership with the Regional Education Service Center, recognized the CISD for participation in the Kindergarten Readiness System. The system is the state’s school readiness certificate system that evaluates the effectiveness of pre-kindergarten, Head Start and licensed child care programs in preparing children for kindergarten.

“Our two Pre-K programs at Carroll and Sam Houston provide rich educational environments for our youngest learners,” said Dr. Diane Frost, superintendent.

“We are very pleased that the efforts of our teachers and administrators are recognized,” Frost said.

The news was shared at Monday’s CISD Trustees meeting for November. A banner recognizing the accomplishment was presented to Carroll Principal Dr. Yvonne Johnson by Frost.

Trustees also heard Monday that the district has achieved a rating of 100 percent highly qualified teachers, a rating of the No Child Left Behind Act.

“Highly qualified” teachers must hold at least a bachelor’s degree, be fully certified to teach in Texas, and demonstrate competency in their core academic subject area.

In addition, all CISD paraprofessionals, who work with teachers in the classroom, are also considered “highly qualified.” To be ranked as a highly qualified paraprofessional, requirements include having completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher learning, obtain an associate’s degree or higher, or meet a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate through a formal State or local academic assessment.

“This is not an easy task,” Frost said. “It takes many people determined to get the right fit for CISD and our students. I commend our Human Resources department and our principals for their efforts in hiring the best qualified candidates.”
