Church News for Friday, Aug. 16, 2013

Corsicana — News and announcements submitted by congregations from throughout Navarro County.

The Second Mission Baptist Church located at 909 South Fifth St. in Corsicana, where Larry L. Polk, Sr., serves as Pastor, will observe the 18th Year Recognition Service for their Pastor on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013.  This year’s theme:  “Who Is On The Lord’s Side?”  from the text of II Corinthians 4:5.  The Morning Worship Service will begin at 11:15 a.m. with guest speaker Minister Gary Floyd of the Galilee Baptist Church of Longview. The afternoon Celebratory Service will begin at 3 p.m. with special guest Pastor Donald R. Parish, Sr. and the True Lee Missionary Baptist Church of Dallas. The congregants invite you to share in this service of praise and thanksgiving for Pastor Larry L. Polk, Sr., who has faithfully served as the Under Shepherd to the Shepherd of the Second Mission B. C. Pastor Polk has diligently proclaimed the authoritative word of God; he is enthusiastic and jubilant to share the message of hope and salvation through a relationship with Jesus Christ.  He is charismatic in his greeting and profound in his execution of the scriptures to be certain we know God’s desire for all to receive this gift of salvation.  The congregants of the Second Church give God all the Glory for Pastor Polk and the tireless service he has given to the people of God.

Blooming Grove United Methodist Church will hold its Lord's Acre celebration on Sept. 14, 2013 at the Blooming Grove Methodist Church. The Country Store will be open from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with take-outs starting at 11 a.m.  Free delivery in Blooming Grove area.  Call (903) 695-2334.  The meal will consist of brisket, potato salad, beans, slaw, dessert and tea.  Adult meals are $8 and children 10 and under $5.  The live auction will begin in the sanctuary at 1 p.m. There will be a drawing for a beautiful homemade quilt made by the BGUMC quilting group. Tickets are being sold now and on the day of the Lord's Acre.  If interested in tickets now you may contact  Carolyn Turner at (903) 695-2226. The donations for the tickets  are 1 for $1 or 6 for $5.

  • City cancels ambulance contract with county

    The City of Corsicana has notified Navarro County officials it is cancelling its agreement with the county to provide EMS ambulance service to areas outside the city limits. According to a letter sent to county officials by Corsicana Mayor Chuck McClanahan, ambulance service to county residents will end on Jan. 31, 2015.

    The project to rebuild Seventh Avenue or Highway 31 as it goes through Corsicana is almost over. From an uneven patchwork of paving and pitted concrete, now it’s a smooth ride from Beaton all the way through town.
    It just took an extra year to finish.

    An attempt to bootleg electricity off a pole using jumper cables is believed to have caused a building fire that took out a former restaurant in Angus Friday morning, one of a series of calls to Navarro County Sheriff’s Office to the southern end of the county over the weekend.
