Corsicana — House of Refuge will hold its fifth annual fundraising concert at First Baptist Church sanctuary. The concert “Glorious” will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 3, 2013. Todd Jones will serve as emcee for the fifth time. Wes and Liz Haefs will return with an old favorite performance, joined by Billy Elias; Crystal Trevino; Shellie Buckley, Shellie O’Neal and the Fine Arts Dept. of Navarro College; Hispanic Fellowship Praise Team; First Baptist Church Choir; Navarro College Students performing song in American Sign Language; Taylor Parks; Lydia Bailey, Todd Jones and Wayne Owen; Grace Worship Team; and Ruined and Redeemed from First Baptist Church, Kerens. This is the one big fundraiser the House of Refuge does each year. Please come out and hear great music and support a wonderful cause.

Intercessors for Navarro County Men’s Prayer Breakfast meet at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Baptist Church, 1700 N. 45th St. Please note the change in venue. Beulah Baptist Church, 814 Martin Luther King Ave., Wortham, will host a Spring Musical at 6 p.m. May 4. All are invited to witness surrounding area choirs, soloists, praise teams/dancers and others participate. If you wish to uplift His name in song, you’re invited to participate. House of Refuge COGIC, 413 FM 709 East, Dawson, Pastor Elder Paul E. Puckett invites you to worship with them at 1 p.m. May 4 when the Women’s Department holds its Spring Program. Taylor Memorial COGIC will have its Feast of the Seven Tables again from 12 to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 11. All you can eat for a donation of $7. You may dine in or take out.   • Wine and walking

    About a dozen local businesses are opening their doors for the Derrick Days Wine and Cheese stroll this year, and many are only doing it as an open house opportunity.

    The stroll is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. April 24 in downtown Corsicana. It's free and open to the public.

    In April 2013, the city of West was forever changed after an explosion at a fertilizer plant killed 15 people and altered the landscape of the tiny Texas town. A year after that deadly blast, the city will stop to remember that fateful day and pay tribute to those who were lost, including Navarro County firefighter Perry Calvin, one of the first responders killed by the blast.

  • Navarro College seeks public input at Town Hall event

    Community perception of the role Navarro College plays, and how it can better serve Corsicana and Navarro County is the goal of a Town Hall meeting called at the college for Monday, April 21. The town hall presentation will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Dr. Richard M. Sanchez Library on the Corsicana campus.

And that storm — typical of spring and summertime weather in Texas — preceded by less than 24 hours a forecast of expected near-freezing temperatures.

  • City OK’s electronic billboard

    The Corsicana City Council is going to tell the city's story in a big, big way — on a 48 foot wide electronic billboard on Interstate 45. The council approved the purchase and construction of the new sign Monday, one that will help promote city events and attractions, and hopefully attract visitors — and their dollars — to the city's businesses and events.
