The opening of the latest exhibit at the Pearce Civil War Museum at Navarro College will feature a special period presentation.
Dr. E. C. Fields, portraying General Ulysses S. Grant, will be at the Pearce Museum at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9, as the museum opens the exhibition Men Made of Iron: The Overland Campaign of 1864.
Fields, in the role of Grant, is scheduled to “update the local population on the recent Battle of Cold Harbor” in keeping with the theme of the exhibit.
A lifelong student of the American Civil War, Dr. Fields’ interest in portraying General U. S. Grant is driven not just by his study of the War, but also his respect and admiration for the General. He is the same height and body style as Grant and, therefore, presents a convincing, realistic image of the man. He has researched and read extensively about General Grant in order to deliver an accurate persona. During presentations, Dr. Fields speaks in the first-person, quoting from General Grant’s memoirs, articles, letters he wrote, or statements he made in interviews.
Dr. Fields received a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from the University of Memphis, and a Master’s and Ph.D. degree from Michigan State University. He is a career educator who taught for eight years at the Junior and Senior high school levels then served for 25 years as a high school Administrator before retiring. He is now an educational consultant, a living history demonstrator, and a speaker on leadership as demonstrated and advocated by General Grant.
He has been an adjunct Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Memphis since 1988, and adjunct Assistant Professor of Education at Belhaven University, Memphis campus, since 2008.
The evening will include a program, reception, and exhibit tour. The program is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. The evening event is free to the public.
