An event that has brought growing numbers of cyclists to Navarro County the last two springs has a new name and a new date.
The event known as the “Corsicana Stage Race” will now be called the Arthrosurface Tour of Corsicana.
The two-day professional cycling event is being underwritten in part by Arthrosurface, a manufacturer of partial joint replacement appliances.
And the date move — to March 22 and 23, 2014 — is expected help the event grow to 260 riders this year, said Mike Frankos, one of the organizers of the event.
Volunteers and organizers met Monday to go over plans for the third annual event — one that is growing in popularity among the professional bike rider circuit.
Co-sponsored by the Corsicana and Navarro County Chamber of Commerce, the event features a time trial on Saturday morning, a downtown Criterion race on Saturday afternoon, and a 22-mile distance race on Sunday.
Previously held the second Saturday in May — Mother’s Day weekend — organizers have decided to move away from that weekend for the benefit of scheduling and participation.
“We had 196 participants the first year, and 219 the second year,” Frankos said.
Participants in the event compete for prizes based on their classifications, and come from all over Texas to take part.
And this year, organizers are hoping to involve local youth in the event, with plans calling for a kids bike ride for youngsters 10 years of age and under along a special downtown course. Three lucky participants in the kids ride will win a new bicycle, Frankos said.
The Saturday morning time trails are held on FM 744 near Tiger Stadium. Saturday afternoon’s downtown Criterion race makes a “figure eight” loop along Beaton, Collin, and Main Streets, with a loop around the Navarro County Courthouse. The Sunday road race is centered near the Parrish Store in Pursley.
Arthrosurface became interested in sponsoring the event after being contacted by Zac Lytle, a Dallas-area cycling enthusiast who has worked with local organizers on the Corsicana event the past two years, Frankos said.
Local sponsorships are also available for the event, said Debbie Wilson of the Corsicana and Navarro County Chamber of Commerce.
Those wishing more information on being a part of the event, or wanting to know more about sponsorship opportunities can contact Frankos at 214-676-6011, or Wilson by contacting the chamber office at 903-874-4731.
