April 6

The American Legion, Post 22, will hold its monthly meeting which will include the annual election of Post officers at 1:30 p.m. at the post. All members and prospective members are invited to attend. All members interested in running for office should use the sign up sheet.

 

American Legion Squadron 22 (Sons of the American Legion) will hold elections for their election at the American Legion, 632 N. Beaton St., at 3:30 p.m. All interested members need to sign up for the election on the sign up sheet.

Angels of Corsicana Troop Support will hold a packing at 9 a.m. at the Angle Room, 1020 N. Bus. 45. All ages are welcome to come pack. Please bring the name of a military member serving in harm’s way with you to the packing so we can do a gift box for our military members. There will be a special meeting following the packing for sign up for the semi-annual barbecue, bake sale, and garage sale, which will be held the first weekend of May. Donations will be accepted from anyone wishing to help raise funds for postage of boxes for our military. From 9 a.m. to 12 noon each Thursday until the garage sale there will be pricing on garage sale items at the Angel Room, volunteers are welcome. April 8

Todd Staples, Texas Agriculture Commissioner, will be speaking to the Republican Party of Navarro County Executive Commmittee at 7:00 p.m. at the Republican Party of Navarro County Headquarters at 111-B West Third Avenue in Corsicana. All registered voters are invited attend.

Woodmen of the World Lodge 5 will have its meeting at 6 p.m. in the Lodge Hall at 200 W. Oak Lawn.  All members, their families and guests are cordially invited.

 

April 9

Corsicana Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) will be at the Corsicana YMCA from 2 to 7 p.m. If you are low income (usually under $42K) or elderly, and in need of tax filing assistance, take advantage of this free program. This year VITA will see clients with appointments first and then work with walk-ins. VITA is at the YMCA on Tuesdays and Thursdays and at the Kerens Library on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. Call George Burrell at (903) 879-2091 to schedule your appointment.

  • YMCA warns against woman fraudulently soliciting funds

    A woman has been soliciting funds, falsely portraying herself as representing the YMCA, Executive Director Terry Seth reported late Wednesday afternoon. A business owner in town informed Seth a lady solicited his business, saying she was raising money for the YMCA for a program for deaf children. Seth says the YMCA does not have such a program.

  • Wine and walking

    About a dozen local businesses are opening their doors for the Derrick Days Wine and Cheese stroll this year, and many are only doing it as an open house opportunity.

    The stroll is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. April 24 in downtown Corsicana. It's free and open to the public.

    In April 2013, the city of West was forever changed after an explosion at a fertilizer plant killed 15 people and altered the landscape of the tiny Texas town. A year after that deadly blast, the city will stop to remember that fateful day and pay tribute to those who were lost, including Navarro County firefighter Perry Calvin, one of the first responders killed by the blast.

  • Navarro College seeks public input at Town Hall event

    Community perception of the role Navarro College plays, and how it can better serve Corsicana and Navarro County is the goal of a Town Hall meeting called at the college for Monday, April 21. The town hall presentation will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Dr. Richard M. Sanchez Library on the Corsicana campus.
