Stokes Scholarship Bequest announced

Corsicana — The Navarro College Foundation has received a bequest of $100,000 from the estate of the late Dr. William Stokes to endow a scholarship in memory of himself and his late wife Elisabeth.

A veteran of World War II, Dr. Stokes began his teaching career at Navarro College in 1947, the second year after the College began operations. He left Navarro in 1953 to join the faculty of Austin Peay University in Tennesse, where he served as chairman of the mathematics department until his retirement in 1985. Dr. Stokes said that his time at Navarro was a very enjoyable part of his teaching career. He was especially proud of his short “coaching career” at Navarro. When the baseball coach resigned at the beginning of the 1951 season, College president Ray Waller asked Stokes if he would coach the team. An avid baseball fan, Stokes jumped at the chance and led the team to a state championship.

Because of his positive experience at Navarro, Stokes established a scholarship some years ago to be awarded to descendents of the “Barracks Bunch,” those students who attended classes when Navarro’s campus was at the Air Activities of Texas. He regularly attended the Homecoming-Alumni luncheon each year to personally award the scholarship.

Stokes passed away in September 2012. This bequest from Dr. Stokes’ estate will honor the memory of Dr. Stokes and his wife by helping students pursue their academic goals.

“Dr. Stokes was a true gentleman who had a heart for students,” said Dr. Tommy Stringer, director of the Navarro College Foundation that manages the Stokes scholarship. “We are pleased to be able to honor him and his wife by providing assistance to Navarro students  as they pursue their academic goals.”
