Corsicana — As Navarro College trustees were meeting with a presidential candidate Wednesday afternoon, an unidentified caller phoned in a bomb threat for the Corsicana campus, which forced cancelation of Wednesday night and Thursday classes at the institution.

The caller said there was a bomb on the campus that would detonate Thursday, said Dewayne Gragg, Vice President of Enrollment Management, Student Success, and Institutional Studies.

The college issued an alert through its Watchdog Alert system at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, announcing the Corsicana campus would close at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and remain closed all day Thursday. The system dispenses emergency information through a system of phone calls, text messages and emails to students and faculty.

Signs announcing the closing were being placed on the campus Wednesday afternoon, and a post on the college’s website announcing the incident was seen online as well.

“Campus police assisted by the Corsicana Police Department and the Navarro County Sheriff’s Department will be searching the campus,” Gragg said. He said the law enforcement presence would be on campus throughout the night Wednesday and all day Thursday, ensuring all campus buildings were “locked down.”

Students who live in on-campus housing would be able to visit the dining hall for meals, but would not be allowed to carry in any book bags or back packs, he said.

“We’re treating it as a credible threat because that’s what we should do, and the only way we can react,” Gragg said.

The call reportedly came in through the college switchboard Wednesday afternoon. Specifics of the call, other than that a bomb was set to detonate on the Corsicana campus on Thursday, were not released by the college.

Dr. Richard Sanchez said that meetings scheduled on Thursday for another interview with a presidential candidate had been postponed until Friday.
