Corsicana — Republican Byron Cook, 58, District 8, won re-election to the Texas House of Representatives Tuesday with 75 percent of the Navarro County votes against challenger Charles Morgan.

In Navarro County, Cook received 10,463 votes, to Morgan’s 4,357 votes.

At press-time, the Texas Secretary of State’s office had results from about half of the district’s total precincts, and Cook was at 72 percent of the total vote, and 75 percent of the early votes.

Cook is the chairman of the powerful State Affairs Committee, and although the legislature is not in session, Cook has continued to work on solutions for electricity supplies for the state’s future.

“I’m always grateful to the people of this district for putting their confidence in me as a representative,” Cook said Tuesday evening. “We’ve got a lot of big issues before us at the state, in fact I spent a good portion of (election day) working on energy issues.”

Cook thanked his supporters and called it “an honor and a privilege to represent this district.”

The former video game distributor has spent 10 years in the state legislature. This next session, which starts in January, will be his sixth two-year term.

“There’s so many great folks in these four counties,” Cook said. “I just want to do the best job I can for this district and the state.”

Challenger Charles E. Morgan said he was surprised at the numbers.

“I’m surprised, I was getting good vibes from Navarro County,” Morgan said. “I hope he’ll do better in the house than in the past.”

He pointed to the energy plan, water plan and noise pollution as things that need to be done.

Morgan has challenged Cook twice for the seat, but he said this would probably be his last time to run for the seat.

“I would like to work with him to get some of these things accomplished, if possible,” he said.
