Parkland doctor shares memories of JFK assassination

Corsicana — The students’ Council on International Affairs (CIA) at Corsicana High School hosted Dr. Robert N. McClelland Monday for a historic presentation about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

McClelland was one of the attending surgeons at Parkland Hospital the day of Kennedy's assassination in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963.

Dr. McClelland spoke to the students about his experience on that day as a 34-year-old physician at the time, and one of three surgeons on the faculty.

He gave a detailed account of what was happening in Trauma Room One at Parkland when the then-President was read his last rights by a priest. He spoke of the quiet composure and self-control of Mrs. Kennedy as she exchanged rings with the President’s hand, kissed his foot and walked out of the room.

McClelland discussed the trauma related to the President’s injuries and said “(There was) very probably more than one shooter.”

Students asked several questions of the retired physician before heading back to class. At the end of the presentation, Dr. McClelland displayed his preserved white, blood-stained shirt he was wearing on that day in the trauma room.

The Council on International Affairs (CIA) is a student service organization at Corsicana High School affiliated with the Dallas/Ft. Worth World Affairs Council. The organization focuses on students’ knowledge about our global society and encourages local citizenship. Faculty sponsors of CIA are Erin Smith and Ginger Pawlowski.
