Corsicana — It was an unselfish act of kindness on the part of a young boy — a story that had children and adults alike wiping tears from their eyes.

And his actions during a family trip to San Antonio were honored Monday, as the Corsicana Independent School District Board of Trustees presented 10-year-old Caleb Vasquez with the first-ever “C-Award” given to a student of the district.

Caleb, a 10-year-old student now attending Fannin Elementary School, was on a family trip to San Antonio over spring break. Sitting in a restaurant, his parents were concerned because Caleb would not eat his dinner. Several attempts to get him to eat were unsuccessful.

When the waiter came to bring the check, Caleb asked for a “to go” box, and put his dinner and his younger brother Josh’s left-over food in it.

On his way out of the restaurant, Caleb gave the box of food to a homeless man he had seen on the street while sitting in the restaurant with his family.

“All of this was a calculated act of kindness over a dinner from a 10-year-old boy,” wrote Cindy McCary, Caleb’s 1st and 2nd grade teacher at Fannin, who nominated Caleb for the award. “A 10-year-old boy with the heart of a champion.”

McCary said the story shared about her former student “came as no surprise to me.

“He’s a 4th grader now, and I am so proud of him and want the ‘world’ to know how kind hearted he is,” she said.

“Every day, I take away something from my students that enriches my life or makes me stop and remember how blessed I am to be a teacher,” McCary wrote, adding she was “blessed beyond measure to have taught Caleb Vasquez.”

Caleb has an older brother too — CHS graduate Louis Vasquez, who recently signed with the Denver Broncos of the National Football League.

“While you’re watching Louis Vasquez block for Peyton Manning this fall, just remember he has a 10-year-old brother named Caleb at Fannin, who is scoring winning touchdowns in the game of life,” McCary shared.

Other individuals honored with “C-Awards” at the meeting Monday include:

Chris Gibbs, who received two awards; Laura Green; Maria Lopez; Bowie teachers Julie Green, Diane Hitt, Crystal Lyles and Melissa Clayton; and Debbie Cottar.
