Powder in letter prompts bakery scare

Corsicana — A mysterious white powder that is now believed to be a hoax was found in a Collin Street Bakery mail order envelope around noon Thursday at the bakery’s downtown location at 401 W. Seventh Avenue in Corsicana.

A hazardous materials crew with the Corsicana Fire Department responded to the emergency call at the Collin Street Bakery’s upstairs business office when a worker found some white powder in the mail. By 1 p.m., the scene had been secured, and the envelope and powder bagged up to await a chemicals expert with the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

“At this time, we’re investigating it as a hoax pending comprehensive testing,” said Corsicana Police Chief Randy Bratton.

The powder was field-tested Thursday by experts from the Federal Bureau of Investigations and a Postal Inspector with the USPS, and determined not to be a dangerous chemical.

“The evidence was turned over to them for further comprehensive testing. At this time, it appears to be a hoax, which is a felony in the state of Texas,” Bratton said.

A note was inside the envelope with the powder, Bratton said. He declined to say what it stated. He did point out that the envelope was one of the bakery’s own mail order envelopes, the type that are used to order pastries by mail.
