Corsicana — The Humane Society of Navarro County will once again host a membership appreciation picnic, starting at 6 p.m. Thursday at Fullerton-Garitty Park, just off McKnight Lane in North Corsicana.

“Instead of always asking people to come work, we’re asking them to come have fun,” said Julie Maupin, president of the association.

The Strays and Mutts Reunion will feature a free hot-dog supper, a blessing of the animals by Father Ed Monk, and a report on the progress of the organization, according to Maupin.

“It’s really just a fun event,” Maupin said.

Any rescued animals, or those adopted from the shelter will get a red ribbon this year, to denote a saved life at the picnic.

“We had a lot of red ribbons last year,” Maupin said. “People have a lot of fun with their pets, socializing, and it’s a good way to garner interest in the Humane Society.”

Part of the short meeting will include a report on the number of spay and neuter procedures done through the society this past year, Maupin said.

The Society assists people with neutering costs for large dogs through donations and a grant.

“We’re really going gangbusters on our spay/neuter program,” she said. “It’s amazing. We’ve done more this year than ever before, and hopefully it’s making a difference at the shelter and in the community.

“We’re really helping a lot of people. We get applications daily,” Maupin said.

Dogs are welcome at the event, but they should be well-socialized, leashed and vaccinated.

The event is free and open to Human Society members and potential members, but people are asked to RSVP by calling (903) 875-1060 or emailing thehsnc@gmail.com.

Several awards will also be presented at Thursday’s event.

“People don’t have enough opportunities to take their dogs to public events, but dog lovers love a chance to do that,” Maupin said.
