Senior Olympics will be held at the IOOF park in Corsicana from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Events include fishing tournament, dominoes, horseshoes, live band and picnic. Facilities participating are Twilight Home, Sterling House, Heritage Oaks West and Retirement Village, Country Meadows and Trisun. Sponsors for the event include many local organizations and businesses.  

The Navarro County Retired Teachers will meet at 9:45 a.m. at Northwest Apartments Community, Center, 1360 Northwest Ave. The program will be presented by Lowell Thompson, Navarro County District Attorney. All former school employees are invited to attend.

Oct. 12

United Way of Navarro County and Russell Stover are teaming up for a fundraiser for the agency. Russell Stover will donate 10 percent of each purchase made Saturday using a special coupon available on the United Way’s Facebook page back to United Way of Navarro County. Angels of Corsicana Troop Support will meet at 9 a.m. at 1020 N. Bus. 45. All ages are welcome to come pack. If anyone has a loved one serving in harm’s way, please bring their address to the packing so we can send a gift box to them. We will have sign up for our garage sale fundraiser this month. We will also discuss Christmas packing. For more information call Jean O’Connor at (903) 851-2560.

When Are We Going Home Ministry will hold its 10th Annual Cheryl Dunn Concert, an award ceremony and trail ride fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The trail ride will include short trails, a scavenger hunt, flag course and lunch for a donation to help build the Break N Free Camp. The events are free to all medically challenged, special needs, disabled children and their immediate siblings up to age 21. A handicapped ramp is available, as well as side/front walkers. A RSVP is required to reserve a trophy for each child with special needs and for a lunch pass. The event will be held at the Break N Free Camp at 4719 NECR 1040, Rice.   • City cancels ambulance contract with county

    The City of Corsicana has notified Navarro County officials it is cancelling its agreement with the county to provide EMS ambulance service to areas outside the city limits. According to a letter sent to county officials by Corsicana Mayor Chuck McClanahan, ambulance service to county residents will end on Jan. 31, 2015.

    The project to rebuild Seventh Avenue or Highway 31 as it goes through Corsicana is almost over. From an uneven patchwork of paving and pitted concrete, now it’s a smooth ride from Beaton all the way through town.
    It just took an extra year to finish.

    An attempt to bootleg electricity off a pole using jumper cables is believed to have caused a building fire that took out a former restaurant in Angus Friday morning, one of a series of calls to Navarro County Sheriff’s Office to the southern end of the county over the weekend.
