Intruder apprehended at Bowie Elementary

Corsicana — CISD Superintendent Dr. Diane Frost has confirmed that an unauthorized intruder was found inside the Bowie Elementary School campus on Thursday.

Frost said the incident occurred after lunch on Thursday when a woman apparently entered the campus through an unlocked cafeteria door. Frost said the door was not locked because cafeteria personnel were taking trash out of the building.

The woman was spotted going through a teacher’s belongings in an empty classroom by another teacher, and campus administrators and police were notified, Frost said. The woman then fled the campus.

Corsicana Police Chief Randy Bratton said city police officers detained the woman a couple of blocks away from the campus in the back yard of a residence. Bratton said the woman was turned over to campus police, who placed her under arrest.

Frost said letters were sent to parents of Bowie students informing them of the incident, and campus staff were reminded of safety and security procedures via an email from the campus principal.

A posting on the CISD website Friday said the woman was also a suspect in a similar situation at Navarro Elementary, but Frost would not confirm that Friday. Bratton said the woman was under a criminal trespass warning issued earlier this year.

The web posting also urged staff and students to immediately report anyone who does not have the appropriate identification visible, and if unsure about whether a person is authorized to be on campus, “report them anyway.”
