Bruce Heller, head of this region’s Rotary Club Shelterbox Response Team, will be speaking at noon Monday at the Sirloin Stockade in Corsicana.
Shelterbox is a disaster response that Rotary International does where they bring supplies and assistance in cataclysmic events.
Heller, who lives in Allen just north of Dallas, has been to Kenya, Peru the Philippines, and Iraq, which will be part of his presentation on Monday in Corsicana.
An architect with over 34 years of experience, Heller has also been involved in real estate development with his wife, Cindy, for 25 years, specializing in office buildings, medical office buildings and specialty hospitals.
In 2010, while looking for an organization in which he could be more “hands on,” Heller began working with the Shelterbox program. Since then, he’s led the DFW Shelterbox team, becoming part of the response team in 2011.
In Kenya, the group created a new town for 7,000 people in six weeks. In 2012, the team assisted victim of an Amazon flood in Peru. Last Christmas, the team responded to the Philippines to help typhoon victims. His most recent deployment was to Iraq to assist Syrian refugees.
People do not need to be part of Rotary to attend this event. It is open to the public, but each guest is responsible for his or her own lunch.
