Power to 300 knocked out when pole snaps Sunday

Corsicana — An 18-wheel tractor trailer trying to turn right onto South 15th Street from FM 709 hit a power pole, knocking out power to about 281 households Sunday in the Retreat area.

The accident happened around 2:30 p.m. as a 2006 Freightliner truck driven by a Corsicana man was on the detour around construction on West Seventh Avenue hit a powerful snag in the form of a snapped power pole.

The pole just happened to be one of those carrying a lot of connectors on it, according to Oncor Spokeswoman Pat Ann Wilson.

“It’s a phase three pole, with a lot of conductors and a lot of wires on it,” she said. “We had to replace the pole. We had to get a contractor in and then transfer all the facilities. We didn’t get it all back on until about 9:44 (Sunday) night.”

The challenge with the project was that it tied up a crucial intersection made more busy by the construction on Seventh Avenue. For more than a year, big-rig traffic has been diverted onto FM 709 and South 15th as a way of getting it off the congested West Highway 31, which is Seventh Avenue through Corsicana. A police officer stood at the intersection to direct the rigs carefully under the swinging wires that draped over the farm-to-market road.

“It was just basically being on the weekend it took a while to get everybody in place to get the work done,” Wilson said.
