Asner to play the Palace Oct. 29

Corsicana — A veteran of stage, screen and television is coming to the stage of the Palace Theatre.

The Corsicana Palace Theatre will present Ed Asner starring as FDR on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 7:30 pm.

Asner, recipient of seven Emmy Awards (“Mary Tyler Moore Show”, “Lou Grant”) and 16 nominations, five Golden Globe Awards, and member of the TV Academy Hall of Fame, will star in the solo performance drama, “FDR,” based upon Dore Schary’s Broadway hit “Sunrise at Campobello,” which ran 70 weeks on Broadway.

Asner’s New York City Theatre credits include Ivanov, The Tempest, Face of a Hero, King Henry V, and Born Yesterday. Other theatrical credits include Woyzck, Volpone, Windoweis Houses, Dybbuk, Red Gloves, Murder in the Cathedral, Miss Julie, The Seagull, Peer Gynt, Juno and the Paycock, and Oedipus Rex. Additional Television work includes appearances as a recurring guest star on the television series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and an Emmy Award Winning role as Captain Davies in the mini-series Roots.

This one-man show takes us through FDR’s White House years including the Depression, the steps leading up to WW II and the war years. Asner shows us why this president was known as “that man in the White House,” scorned by many and admired by most.

We see and hear his fireside chats; his controversial packing of the Supreme Court; his personal life with Eleanor and his discreet but definite affair with Lucy Mercer; his courage to break the Neutrality Act; his manipulation of Congress (in order to get the country to have a draft); the Pearl Harbor controversy an the benevolent dictatorship he called the presidency from 1933 to 1944, which made him the first man in history to be elected to four terms.

Asner is magnificent as FDR and delivers a fearless performance of this dynamic and powerful world leader. This show has played for rave reviews across the nation and the Corsicana Palace Theatre is pleased to present this renowned actor to the community.

FDR is the second show in the Palace’s 2013-2014 season which also includes the Broadway tour of Sweet Charity, the famous Harlem Gospel Choir, the Logan/Walters Harp Duo, and Peter Noone and Herman’s Hermits. Season tickets are still available for this fantastic season.

Tickets to this one night event are $40 for the front of the floor and lower balcony, $35 for the back of the floor and $30 for the upper balcony. This event is sponsored by The J. Tom Eady Charitable Trust, EM Sheppard Foundation, CL “Buster” and Toni Brown and Community National Bank and Trust.
