Court fight over Texas abortion law enters second day

AUSTIN - Federal proceedings to determine the constitutionality of key portions of Texas' sweeping new abortion law are entering their second day.

The law passed the Legislature this summer despite a 12-plus hour Democratic filibuster and massive protests on both sides of the issue at the state Capitol.

It requires doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals to perform abortions.

The law also only allows abortions in surgical centers and bans the procedure after 20 weeks, while limiting medication-induced abortions.

Abortion rights groups have asked U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel to block implementation of the admitting privileges requirement and rules on medical abortions.

The proceedings are expected to conclude Tuesday, after two days.

It's unclear when Yeakel will rule. For now, the law is set to take effect Oct. 29.
