Kerens band headed to state

Corsicana — The “Award Winning Kerens Bobcat Band” is headed to the UIL Texas State Marching Contest that will be held on Nov. 4 in San Antonio.

On Oct. 26, the Bobcat Band was one of four bands selected to advance to state at the UIL Area D Marching Contest. The state is divided up into five areas, each having approximately the same number of bands. Each area can send three or four bands to the state competition. There were approximately 200 bands that started the process in mid-October.

The Kerens Band has worked many hours to have a chance of advancing to the state marching contest this year. The band began preparation on Aug. 1, working between three and five hours a day until school started. After school started, the band had from one to three 7 a.m. rehearsals every week. On Oct. 23, the band began its “march to state” by earning a rating of “Superior” at the UIL Region 8 Marching Contest. This was the band’s 13th “Superior” Rating at the Region Contest since 2000. The band only had two days of practice between the Region and Area Contests to make improvements. The Bobcat Band placed 3rd in Prelims. After lightning ended the Area Contest before Finals were completed, the State UIL Music Director decided to end the contest and use the results to Prelims as the final rankings.

The UIL Texas State Marching Contest is being held at the Alamodome in San Antonio this year.  The Award Winning Kerens Bobcat Band is proud to be one of 17 1A bands representing their schools at the UIL Texas State Marching Contest.

The band previously advanced to the UIL State Marching Contest in 2003 and 2007, placing 9th and 18th respectively.

Kerens is scheduled to perform early Monday, at 7:58 a.m.
