Corsicana — The Navarro County Historical Society recognized the contributions of Babbette Samuels and Bobby Fluker when the group met for its annual dinner Thursday at Kinsloe House. Fluker’s award was presented posthumously, and was accepted by his wife, Billie.

Samuels received the Preservation Award for her work with the Jewish Cemetery in Corsicana. Samuels said she and her husband took over care of the cemetery around 2000. Now widowed and 85 years of age, she continues to care for the cemetery. The award also recognized her efforts to record each of the grave sites, in acquiring a state historical marker for the cemetery, and to make sure the artifacts were returned to the Temple Beth-El.

“I’m here,” Samuels said following the presentation. “I thank the good Lord I’m here to do it.”

Accepting the Historian of the Year award on behalf of Bobby Fluker was Billie Fluker, his wife.

Bobby’s accomplishments included his work with the Lefty Frizzell museum, Petroleum Park and the Peace Officer’s Museum.

“I know how much Bobby loved all these things,” she said.  “I loved his classic country music and he felt he helped bring a lot of people to this city.”

Taking over the work on the Peace Officer’s Museum is Les Cotten, who presented the award to Fluker.

The group also voted Thursday on the 2014-15 slate of officers. Elected to head up the society are Stephen Farris, president; Kit Herrington, vice president; Faith Holt, secretary; and John Barron, treasurer.

The program for the evening was a performance by Dr. Shellie O’Neal of her one-woman show on the life of Fanny Crosby, the blind 19th century poet and lyricist who wrote more than 8,000 hymns, including “Blessed Assurance,” as well as thousands of poems. This was O’Neal’s 39th performance of the show, which she’s taken all over the state, and which she’ll be performing in London next year.
