Kerens man found guilty in weapons case

Corsicana — A Kerens man found guilty after a four day trial in District Court has been sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Emilio Martinez, 33, was found guilty of evading arrest, and resisting arrest with a deadly weapon.

Martinez was sentenced to three years in for evading arrest, and 10 years for resisting arrest with a deadly weapon — a loaded handgun.

The charges stem from a 2012 incident that followed a traffic stop in Kerens. Martinez barricaded himself in his home in Kerens following the incident, and Navarro County tacital officers were called to assist Kerens officers in ending the standoff, said R. Lowell Thompson, Navarro County District Attorney.

After agreeing to surrender to tactical officers, Martinez became combative and fought with Sheriff’s deputies Elmer Tanner (then a captain in the NCSO) and Darrell Waller, who wrestled the loaded weapon from Martinez and took him into custody.

Thompson said it was the most dangerous case involving a threat to the life of law enforcement officers he’d seen as a prosecutor.

“Tanner and Waller and the officers of Kerens showed their bravery in dealing with the suspect with a loaded weapon,” Thompson said.

He also praised the work of assistant prosecutors Amy Cadwell and Jason Horn for their work on the case.

Sheriff Tanner said Friday he was pleased to see the guilty verdict in the case.

“"I'm real pleased with the jury's decision,” Tanner said.

‘It shows how much the jury thinks of law enforcement."
