Certainly one of the attractions for the Back to School/Stay in School rally are the prizes. Donations by corporate and individual sponsors have allowed the organizers to come up with some impressive prizes and this year was no exception.
Heneicia Jackson of Corsicana High won a Kindle Fire, Jackie Dunbar of Collins Middle School won a Dr Pepper basketball goal, and Christian Hawkins of Carroll Elementary won the $100 Walmart gift card. Cheyanne Harris of Head Start won a Smart Learning Board. The winners were drawn from the schools’ registration boxes with the most attendance.
The Saturday event had about 3,000 visitors, an even larger crowd that in past years, according to organizer Elmeree Burrell.
“It was fantastic,” she said. “We had more than 3,000. It was very exciting this year.”
While prizes are one attraction, this year’s venue may have also boosted the number of people who turned out. Instead of hosting it in the park, this year’s rally took place inside the I.O.O.F. Event Center.
“It could have been because of being indoors, but it was actually announced all over, even the radio station announced it each morning,” Burrell said. “It was nice and cool and many people said ‘this is wonderful.’”
Fifty six vendors had booths at the rally, and in addition to offering information and even items for sale, they also gave away school supplies. Home Pharmacy had two tall carts of supplies, which were gone within the first 35 minutes of the rally’s start, Burrell said.
“It turned out to be great,” she said.
