Movie night set for Fullerton-Garitty Park

Northland showing ‘Dolphin Tale’ during free event

Corsicana — When Kelsey Teel began thinking about a community appreciation event, her mind drifted back to her days in Austin as a college student.

She had attended outdoor movies in the park put on by the city, and watched the classics under the stars at neighbord watch parties.

“They had always been fun, and I wanted to bring one to Corsicana,” Teel said.

And she is.

Friday, Northland Communications is presenting the family-oriented “Dolphin Tale” at Fullerton-Garitty Park. The fun begins at 7 p.m., Teel said, and will include free drinks via Dr Pepper, and free popcorn. The movie will start as soon as it’s dark enough to show off the amphitheater backdrop, which will serve as the event’s silver screen.

“I’m excited,” said Teel, Northland’s marketing director. “If it’s successful, we’ll be open to doing more.”

The night is also sponsored by several local businesses, including Two Doors Down, which signed on before closing its doors last week. Two Doors Down would often hold weekend watch parties and blast the movies off the side of its building on Sixth Avenue.

Dr Pepper, the Corsicana Parks and Recreation and the Corsicana Daily Sun are also sponsoring Movie on the Green.

“We like to be involved in the community,” said Jimmy Keele, Corsicana Dr Pepper’s branch manager. “We help out when we can, especially when it’s for kids.”

The Kiwanis Club will assist with drink and popcorn distribution.

Parks and Recreation Director Sharla Allen said the city is also excited to be partnering in Movie Night on the Green.

“The Parks Department encourages the community to come out and spend the evening at Fullerton-Garitty Park with friends and family,” Allen said. “Bring your lawn chair, bug spray, and remember to keep pets on leash.”

“Dolphin Tale” is the story of a boy who finds an injured dolphin in a crab trap, and fights to see that it is saved after losing its tale. It stars Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd in their third movie together (“High Crimes” and ‘Kiss the Girls”), as well as Harry Connick Jr. (“Hope Floats”).

It is rated PG, and lasts one hour, 53 minutes.
