The Derrick Days cook-off ran a little behind schedule, but that didn’t dim the enthusiasm for the event at all.
In all, there were 69 brisket cooks, 74 chili entries and 74 entries for beans.
For Roy Scoggins, who’s been competing for the past six years, it’s not about who comes in first.
“Just to get out with other people and see you friends. It’s like a class reunion every year,” Scoggins said. “We’ve all got these busy lives. It would be nice to win, but it’s great to just take time away from the rat race and sit back and have no worries.
“Life’s too serious to take it serious all the time,” he said. “Whether you win or lose, it’s fun.”
Rebecca and Billy Bland have also been participating for years.
“Basically, it’s a family competition for bragging rights for a year,” Rebecca said.
Brian Self, who took first place in the brisket category, represented CorsiTech and their “Chemically Imbalanced” team. It’s his fourth year to compete.
“We do it as a team. We do several entries in each category so everyone can participate,” he said.
It’s about having fun amongst the employees, and their neighbors, Self said.
“Just to build teamwork at the plant, and to come out into the community,” he said. “We definitely do take it seriously. But we like coming out and doing this for the community.”
Placing in the competitions were the following cooks:
