UPDATE: Tip led to arrest in Derrick Days theft

Corsicana — A woman suspected of embezzling over $25,000 from the bank accounts of the Derrick Days Festival has been arrested.

Christle Owens, 31, of Corsicana, is in custody at the Navarro County Jail in connection with the alleged embezzlement.

Owens was arrested in Ferris by the Ennis Police Department, and was transferred to the Navarro County jail Wednesday morning.

A “Crimestopper’s Tip” helped lead to Owens’ arrest, according to Corsicana Police Chief Randy Bratton and Navarro County Sheriff Elmer Tanner.

“We received a Crimestoppers Tip in regards to her possible location and some additional intelligence on her and made contact with the Corsicana Police Department CID,” Tanner said, advising them of the information.

Bratton said his agency enlisted the help of Ennis Police early Wednesday morning to try and locate Owens, believed to be at a location in Ferris.

“Ennis Det. Jason York and additional Ennis officers responded to Ferris ... they located her and arrested her without incident. They helped transport her back here.”

Corsicana Police served arrest warrants on Owens at the Navarro County Jail on three counts of credit/debit card abuse in connection with the Derrick Days investigation, and one count of theft of property over $50/under $500 in connection with a theft involving Owens’ former employer, Ideal Storage.

Owens had served as vice-president of the annual festival’s executive committee. She volunteered to also take over duties of treasurer following the resignation of the former treasurer. Funds from the festival’s bank accounts were reported missing in March.

Police had sought Owens since March, after Derrick Days President Fran Townes was informed by bank officials that the festival's accounts were empty.

Over $25,000 is believed to have been taken from the Derrick Days bank accounts.

Owens remained jailed Wednesday pending arraignment.
