Corsicana — Navarro College Police arrested a 20-year-old Houston man Friday in connection with a bomb threat that closed the Corsicana college campus Thursday.

Navarro College Police Chief Kraig Hawkins said his staff and investigator David Arnett used technology to help track down the suspect, who confessed to making the bomb threat in a meeting with college police Friday afternoon.

Hawkins said using phone records obtained from a cell phone company, and GPS technology, the department was able to track down the phone and its owner — a Houston man who Hawkins said was the godfather of the suspect arrested Friday. He led investigators to the suspect, who came to Corsicana Friday to meet with college police.

Hawkins said the suspect told them he was frustrated trying to get registered at the college. Hawkins said all that was lacking was a transcript from his former high school. He said phone records indicated the suspect made a call Wednesday to the former high school, just two minutes before the bomb threat was phoned in to the college switchboard. Phone records also showed several calls to the college registrar's office from the suspect's phone as well, Hawkins said.

After being interviewed and giving a signed statement confessing to making the threat, the suspect was booked into the Navarro County Jail where he awaits arraignment. He is expected to be arraigned Saturday by Navarro County Justice of the Peace Jackie Freeland.

“I’m very proud of our officers,” said Hawkins. “They worked as a team checking every building, hallway, closet and room ... I can’t say enough about the collaborative effort.”

Hawkins said both Corsicana Police Chief Randy Bratton and Navarro County Sheriff Elmer Tanner pledged their full support to college police during the incident. Police helped provide extra patrols while college officers searched the buildings on campus.
