Mayor: State Home decision not final

Corsicana — Corsicana Mayor Chuck McClanahan shared some of the plans community leaders are making Tuesday in response to the Texas Juvenile Justice Department’s announcement Friday that it is going to recommend the closure of the Corsicana Residential Treatment Center — known locally as the Corsicana State Home.

The TJJD announced plans for a public hearing July 15 in Austin to allow for input on its recommendation before the proposal goes to the full TJJD board in a July 26 meeting. The state’s Legislative Budget Board has final say on whether or not to go through with the TJJD staff recommendation.

McClananan sent out an email to Corsicana citizens Tuesday afternoon. Below is the text of the mayor’s announcement:

Dear Citizens,

Last week I received some very troubling news. The Texas Juvenile Justice Department announced that it will be recommending to the Legislative Budget Board a budget that will include the closure of the Corsicana Residential Treatment Facility. The final decision on what will go to the LBB will be made on July 26.

The first thing you should know is a group of concerned leaders will travel to Austin on July 15 for a public hearing. During this meeting, I will present to the TJJD Board reasons why the facility in Corsicana should not be closed.

There have been discussions about the future of the program in Corsicana for 10 years. I believe there are valid reasons to continue to operate the facility here.

One of the biggest assets Corsicana has is the volunteer hours dedicated to helping the young people at this location. The other asset is Navarro College and the training programs offered here. Everyone understands this would be a blow to the community.

The second thing you should know is the decision is not final. You can make a difference in the outcome. Please contact the individuals below to share your views on the final decision. If you would like to provide any information that would be helpful in summarizing the value of the community to this facility, please email me at cmcclanahan@ci.corsicana.tx.us.
