After months of preparation and planning, the first shovels full of “ceremonial dirt” will be turned next week on the much-anticipated Corsicana Water and Adventure Park project.
Project, city and county leaders will take part in the groundbreaking of the entertainment park in a ceremony slated for 10 a.m. Friday, July 12, at the site near the busy Interstate 45/Highway 287 intersection on land between the Denny’s and Subway restaurants.
The planned 23-acre outdoor water park project was announced earlier in 2013 at the Corsicana and Navarro County Chamber of Commerce Banquet. Plans call for the park to open in Summer 2014.
Developer of the project is Michael A. Jenkins, president of Leisure and Recreation Concepts Inc. Jenkins has been involved in the development of over 1,000 theme parks worldwide, including projects with Disney and Six Flags.
The project’s first phase is being developed at a cost of $9 million, and is expected to draw over 115,000 visitors annually.
Phase 1 of the park will include a large lagoon with zip lines over it, paddle boats, and a water fountain show; a “lazy river” ride, which will pass by a stage, and curl around two play pools; designs include several eating places, a beach volleyball court, and large go-cart course.
The facility is expected to employ over 50 full-time personnel, with seasonal employment opportunities possibly reaching 150 part-time workers.
In addition to boosting tourism and recreational opportunities in the region, the park is also expected to generate total sales tax revenues of $297,000, according to a release from Mayor Chuck McClanahan announcing the park.
The city of Corsicana received a $750,000 state grant for infrastructure in March, which will help fund improvements in roads, water and sewer facilities in connection with the new development.
The entertainment complex joins a host of other developments in the immediate area, including several restaurants, two new hotels, retail outlets, and a new multi-screen cinema.
