Line-up set for water park groundbreaking

Corsicana — Corsicana Mayor Chuck McClanahan; developer and designer Michael Jenkins; Rick Rhodes, with the Texas Department of Agriculture; Texas Rep. Byron Cook; and Navarro County Judge H.M. Davenport are scheduled to speak Friday at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new water park in Corsicana.

The ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at the site, roughly behind the Denny’s just off Interstate 45 and U.S. 287. The 23-acre outdoor water park project is being developed by Jenkins, president of Leisure and Recreation Concepts Inc. Jenkins has been involved in the development of over 1,000 theme parks worldwide, including projects with Disney and Six Flags.

The project’s first phase is being developed at a cost of $9 million, and is expected to draw over 115,000 visitors annually. Phase 1 of the park will include a large lagoon with zip lines over it, paddle boats, and a water fountain show; a “lazy river” ride, which will pass by a stage, and curl around two play pools; designs include several eating places, a beach volleyball court, and large go-cart course.

The facility is expected to employ over 50 full-time personnel, with seasonal employment opportunities possibly reaching 150 part-time workers.

The city of Corsicana received a $750,000 state grant from the Texas Department of Agriculture to help fund improvements in roads, water and sewer facilities for the project.

The park is expected to open in summer of 2014.
