Corsicana — A man wearing a gas mask and a wig trying to rob a downtown finance company was arrested without incident Wednesday afternoon.

Corsicana Police, responding to a 9-1-1 call reporting a possible robbery in progress, found the suspect still inside Covington Credit in the 100 block of West Collin Street.

Corsicana Police Chief Randy Bratton said the man was brandishing a hammer that was covered up to appear to be a firearm, and demanded money from the employees of the business.

“He took the mask and wig off and was engaging in conversation with the manager and the clerk when we arrived,” Bratton said. “We took him into custody.”

Bratton said the suspect did not get any money from the store, and that no one was injured in the incident that was reported just before 4 p.m.

Bratton said they are looking into a report that the same suspect entered another business prior to the robbery attempt with the gas mask and wig on, but did not demand any money or threaten anyone.

The suspect will be charged with attempted armed robbery, Bratton said. Police are continuing their investigation. The suspect hasn’t been identified pending arraignment.

Police were initially alerted to the incident by someone who observed the suspicious activity.

“Somebody driving by, walking by or working nearby called 9-1-1 and gave a pretty good description,” Bratton said.

“I commend the concerned citizen that called us,” Bratton added. “They did the right thing and called 9-1-1 before this escalated and got somebody hurt.”
