With a new presence on social media, the Navarro County Crime Stoppers program is alive and well.
The Navarro County Crime Stoppers group has launched a Facebook page to help spread its message, hoping to generate new leads in crimes.
The local group was founded in 1983 to serve as a clearing house for tips to be passed along to law enforcement in the area working to solve crimes.
And over the years, the Navarro County Crime Stoppers program has done just that.
Since its inception, their have been over 1,600 such tips turned in to law enforcement through the local program. Those tips have resulted in 180 arrests of individuals wanted for criminal activity. Information from the anonymous tip line has also resulted in 225 crimes being solved, including two homicides.
Also because of information obtained through the Crime Stoppers program, over $336,000 in stolen property has been recovered, and over $5 million in narcotics have been taken off the streets.
Crime Stoppers also offers rewards to those who provide tips that help solve felony crimes. The unique feature about the Crime Stoppers program is callers do not have to identify themselves by name, yet can still be eligible for a reward. Using a system that gives an anonymous caller an identification number, the group can still pay out rewards while protecting the identity of those helping law enforcement.
Since its 1983 debut, the Navarro County Crime Stoppers program has paid out over 145 rewards totaling over $36,000.
Now, the group is hoping to expand its reach with a new presence on the Internet through a Facebook page — Navarro County Crime Stoppers.
The phone number to provide Crime Stoppers with information is 903-874-TIPS — or 903-874-8477. Calls can be made at any time.
