Corsicana — New and announcements from service clubs and organizations throughout Navarro County.

Colonel Roger Q. Mills Chapter 2466, UDC

Col. Roger Q. mills Chapter 2466, UDC, met May 28, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Ward Prairie Baptist Church in Fairfield. The meeting was called to order by President Dana Stubbs. Chaplain Geneva Davis led the opening prayer. Stubbs led the pledges to the flags  and salute to Confederate Flag and the Ritual and Lord’s Prayer.

Secretary/Treasurer Nancy Weems read the minutes of the March 25 meeting which were approved.

Vice President Jan Reeder reported on her trip to Palestine for the Memorial Plaza Dedication. Registrar Nancy Rula reported that chapter has 30 members. Historian Barbara Robinson is working on the scrapbook. Pres. Stubbs conducted the Virginia Nash Raffle.

Stubbs reported the marker for the A.F. Morse Dedication has been ordered and T-shirts are available. The Memorial Marker Dedication is scheduled for Oct. 26, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in Oakwood Cemetery.

She also reported on taking part in a musical program in Houston by portraying Elizabeth Glover.

Geneva Davis reported on a trip she, Ines Waggoner, and Nancy Weems made when driven to the home of JoAnn Surls in Malakoff by Bill Davis. The occasion was the dedication of a sculpture garden in memory of her husband Joe W. Surls. Geneva showed pictures of the setting.

Ruth Hall read part of an article from Parade Magazine about Memorial Day (previously known as Decoration Day, which began during the War Between the States.

Stubbs reported that she and Norman attended the Battle of Temple and the Battle at Jefferson reenactments and that there would be a barbecue honoring Jefferson Davis on June 1 in Tyler.

The National Convention will be Nov. 7-11 in Tulsa, Okla.

The president led a Memorial Service by lighting a candle to remember ancestor who died during the War Between the States. Marlene Ivy and Stubbs each had an ancestor who died during that conflict.

Jan Reeder gave the program “From Atlanta to Nashville.” Stubbs read a poem written by her mother Alice Bell, titled “No Place Like Dixie.”

The singing of “Dixie” was led by Judy Greene and refreshments were served by Pat Chappell and Dean Nevills. Twelve members were present.

The next meeting will take place Sept. 30, 2013 in Corsicana.
