NCSO deputy unhurt in crash

Corsicana — A Navarro County Sheriff's Deputy escaped injury Saturday morning when his patrol vehicle was struck by a suspected drunk driver.

Deputy Brandon Bates had been dispatched to West State Highway 31 and NWCR 2191 early Saturday morning to remove debris from the roadway.

Bates parked his vehicle on the side of the roadway and turned on his overhead and warning lights while he cleared the roadway of the remnants of a large couch that had fallen on the highway.

Despite the warning lights in full view, the approaching vehicle rear-ended the deputy's patrol vehicle. Bates was not in the car and was not hurt.

The Texas Department of Public Safety investigated the crash and arrested the driver of the vehicle that struck the deputy's patrol unit on charges of driving while intoxicated.

"We're very grateful that the deputy was not hurt, and that no one in the other vehicle was hurt," said Sheriff Elmer Tanner.

The sheriff was also thankful there was no explosion after the rear-end collision.
Tanner said the Crown Victoria patrol units similar to the one that Deputy Bates was driving have at times erupted in flames as the result of a rear-end collision such as the one that occurred Saturday.
