Council denies fence variance

Corsicana — The Corsicana City Council refused to act on a request for a variance for the American RV park on West Highway 31 when the council met in regular session Tuesday.

The park has had two previous variances from the rules that require mobile home and RV parks to have screening fences, but those were issued to previous owners. The current owner has asked for variances, but has not been approved for those. In recent years, the city has become more stringent on the mobile home parks around the city, in an effort to beautify the city’s entrances.

The owners’ lawyer, Neal Green, argued that the fencing wasn’t necessary because his clients’ RV park is well-kempt. However, the council refused to take action on the request, so it died for lack of a motion.

In other business, the council approved a May 11 local election, and approved having the county run the election, if there is a contested race. Mayor Chuck McClanahan, Pct. 3 Councilman John McClung, Pct. 4 Councilman Don Denbow, Municipal Judge Mike Russell, and the city attorney’s position are up for election in 2013.

In a work session prior to the meeting, the council heard proposals for budget amendments that would allow for some work on more streets, one-time bonuses for employees instead of a raise, more money for water-line repairs, and spending hotel/motel tax funds on some downtown events, including mini-concerts on the Second Saturdays of each month.
