Water Park project seeks bidders; targets opening in spring 2015

Corsicana — The target date has changed, but all remains on track for the Corsicana Water and Adventure Park project.

Challenges for contractors being able to meet the project’s original timetable have resulted in a new target opening date of Spring 2015.

That’s the word from Michael Jenkins of Leisure and Recreation Concepts, the Dallas-based developer for the project, a 23-acre family friendly attraction that expects to draw more than 115,000 visitors annually to the Corsicana venue.

With plans and financing agreements in place, and some site work already completed, Jenkins is now hoping to attract renewed interest by local contractors now that the construction deadline has been relaxed.

“That’s the only reason for the delay,” Jenkins said Thursday.

Jenkins said it had been a goal of the project from its inception to make use of as many local contractors as possible, but some of the responses he’s received in soliciting contractors to bid on the park’s elements is that the work is either too big for them to handle, or the timeline was too aggressive for the bidders to take on.

Jenkins explained it made more business sense to ease the timetable pressure on contractors to complete the work in time for a short season in 2014, and try to attract more local help to finish the park for an early 2015 opening. He said the “early target” for the opening is now April 4, 2015, and the “late target” would be Memorial Day weekend.

“It made more economic sense for our investors, and have a park we can be proud of,” he added.

Jenkins said they are expecting to hear from several contractors in the next week or so, now that the timetable has changed, but would like to renew his call to get local companies involved.

“We would love to talk to them,” he said. Jenkins asked that any local contractors who want to talk with him about becoming involved in the project should contact him at his Dallas office at 214-942-4474.

Jenkins said the project will have a booth open during Derrick Days promoting the Corsicana Water and Adventure Park and invited the public to drop by.
