Corsicana High School takes third at UIL Academics Meet

Corsicana — Corsicana High School came in third at UIL  Academics Spring Meet for 4A schools in District 16 last week at Lindale High School.

The final competition was Saturday, with one-act play, where Corsicana scored first, and individual awards included Best Actor for Tiano McDonald, and Christian Minniear, and Danny Phillips were named to the All-Star Cast. Veronica Reyes and Donovan Hailey were named honorable mentions to the All Star Cast, and Kayza Mallett and Hailey Herrin won Outstanding Technical Awards.

Lindale High School won first place overall at the meet with 569.6 points, while Whitehouse High placed second with 472 points. Corsicana students brought home 232.3 points, Nacogdoches received 79 points, Jacksonville High School, 71 points, and Tyler High School got 36 points.

The events, and Corsicana individual students' rankings are as follows:

Accounting: First place, Walter Torres; third place, Ben Crocker; fourth, Caroline Kennemore; fifth, Claire Vadasy.

Current Issues: First place, Leland Cook; fifth place, Kaitlin Griffin.

Lincoln-Douglas Debates: Second place, Todd Warren.

Literary Criticism: Fifth place, Taylor Clift.

Poetry Interpretation: First place, Christian Minniear; third place, Tiano McDonald; fifth place, Lexi Nelson.

Prose Intrepretation: Fourth place, Reagan Fraze; fifth place, Caitlin Pohland.

Ready Writing: Courtney Reeves.

Science: Seventh place, Manuel Perez.

Social Studies: Sixth place, Leland Cook.

Spelling and Vocabulary: Third place, Ana Garcia; fifth p lace, Harisse Bautista; sixth place Ylieza Delia, seventh place, Zana Brown.

Team events in which Corsicana placed:

Accounting, first; Current issues, first; Cross Examination Debate, fourth; One-Act Play, first; Speech, second; Spelling and Vocabulary, second.

The middle-school competition for UIL Academics was the first week in March in Nacogdoches, and Collins Middle School students excelled in both team and individual events, with the eighth graders placing third in the overall competition, and seventh graders placing fourth behind Lindale and Whitehouse.

The eighth-grade Spelling team of Sheila Garcia, Jennifer Sosa and Matthew Guo brought home first place. The Science team of David Teran, Aniq Chunara and Matthew Guo took second place.

Also bringing home second-place was the Chess team, of Abel Velasco, Alex Yepez and Johan Richardson. The Mathematics team of John Beck, Victoria Martinez and Matthew Guo also got second, as did the Number Sense team of John Beck, Matthew Guo and Jessie Krantz.

The Listening team of Dustin McCarter, Maria Ramirez and Victoria Martinez placed fourth.

Individual awards for eighth-graders from Collins were as follows:

Mathematics: First place, John Beck; Sixth place, Victoria Martinez.

Calculator Applications: First place, John Beck.

Number Sense: First place, John Beck.

Science: Second place, David Teran; third place, Aniq Chunara.

Modern Oratory: Second place, Aniq Chunara; Sixth place, Kameron Betts.

Prose: Second place, Aniq Chunara; Fifth place, Jennifer Sosa.

Spelling: Third place tie, Sheila Garcia and Jennifer Sosa; Sixth place, Matthew Guo.

Chess Puzzle: Fourth place, Abel Velasco; Sixth place, Alex Yepez.

Impromptu Speech: Fourth place, Alison Andrews.

Listening: Fourth place, Dustin McCarter.

Seventh graders at Collins also did well winning fourth overall.

Seventh graders won third in team Calculator Applications. The team is composed of Caden Reed, J.R. Reynolds and Vanessa Guerra.

The Mathematics team also took third, that team is made up of Caden Reed, J.R. Reynolds and Jan Carlo Perez.

And the Social Studies team also took third, and that team is made up of Kelsey Vincent, Kamron Thompson and Jonathan Monk.

Modern Oratory: First place, Jonathan Monk.

Prose: Second place, Derica Pipkin; sixth place, Jayla Johnson.

Impromptu Speech: Second place, Derica Pipkin.

Ready Writing, essay: Second place, Ann Nguyen; fifth place, Garrin Fraze.

Calculator Applications: Second place, Caden Reed.

Mathematics: Third place, Caden Reed.

Number Sense: Fifth place, Caden Reed.

Poetry: Third place, Maiden Barber; Fourth place, Malika Muhommed; Sixth place, Anaria Brown.

Social Studies: Fourth place, Kelsey Vincent.

Science: Fourth place, J.R. Reynolds.

Editorial Writing: Sixth place, Jayla Johnson.

Listening Skills: Jan Carlo Perez.
