Navarro College Cheerleaders ready to defend title

Corsicana —  The winning tradition of the Navarro College Cheerleaders gets its next test in Florida next week.

That's when the squad will defend its national title at the National Cheer Association/National Dance Association's Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Under the leadership of coach Monica Aldama, the Bulldogs are no stranger to the event, or the winner's podium. Aldama's teams have brought back titles the last five years straight, and have racked up 10 championships under her leadership since the year 2000.

But winning the Junior College championship wasn't the squad's only accomplishment — the Bulldogs have also claimed the “Grand Championship” Award at the competition the last two years — earning the top scores of all colleges at the event, big and small — and is hoping to “three-peat” of that Grand Champion status in 2014.

In the 2013 event, Navarro College was in first place following the competition's preliminary round, and repeated its top place showing in the finals, winning with a final point total of 97.45, besting second place Trinity Valley Community College of Athens by 1.5 points to capture the title.

Weatherford College placed third in the final competition with a point total of 94.38, and Wallace State Community College of Hanceville, Ala. finished fourth with a score of 94.18.

In addition to the defense of its national titles, Navarro College has also entered a couple in the “Stunt Team” competition in Daytona Beach. Navarro students Brittany Hughes of Arlington and Kailen Jones of Kansas make up the college's stunt team entry. The pair qualified for the competition after submitting a video of their performance, Aldama said.

The Navarro Cheer squad has 28 members — 20 will be performing in Daytona, but all team members are making the trip.

“They are very excited,” Aldama said of her squad. “They've been working really, really hard and I can't wait to see them compete.”
