Corsicana — Navarro County deputies tracking down leads Thursday in a weekend truck crash didn’t find the truck they were looking for.

But when they checked the house next door, they found something they weren’t looking for — marijuana growing in the backyard. And for four people at that home Thursday, that find meant a free trip to the Navarro County Jail.

Sheriff Elmer Tanner said deputies Keith Lewis and John Ellington were following up on leads from a weekend incident involving a hit and run driver whose pickup truck damaged a vacant home on FM 744, then was towed from the scene, leaving behind about $30,000 worth of damage. Information developed from evidence found at the scene led deputies to a home on NWCR 2007 not far from the accident scene. However, deputies found no one at home at the time of their visit, and no truck.

A walk to the next door neighbor’s house to see if they had any information on the truck or its owner resulted in a temporary change of assignment for the lawmen, Tanner said.

“They saw marijuana growing in the back yard of the residence,” Tanner said. “Subsequently (deputies) seized a quantity of marijuana both inside the residence and outside where the plants were growing.”

Tanner said four individuals at the home were arrested on charges of possession of marijuana under two ounces.

The names of the individuals arrested were not released Thursday because they had not yet been arraigned.

Deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers are still trying to find the individual and truck involved in the Sunday morning crash in the 5900 block of FM 744. The truck is believed to be a 1999 to 2004 Ford F-150 pickup truck, charcoal gray in color, likely with a substantial amount of front end damage.

Troopers believe the truck crashed through a row of trees into the garage of the home of FM 744, then struck a car parked in the garage, knocking it through the back wall of the garage.
