Corsicana — July 4

Kerens Chamber of Commerce will host its 20th Annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July with a downtown celebration beginning at 6:30 p.m. There will be a bicycle parade, so bring your decorated bikes and meet in front of the baseball field at 6:15 p.m. There will be a cake walk, train rides, sack races, washer pitching, bounce house, bingo, live music, egg toss, water games, and an Ice Cream “Churn Off.” Prizes will be awarded for the top three placings. Also available will be hot dog dinners, snowcones, watermelon and ice cream. Makes plans now to attend.

July 5

The American Legion, Post 22, 632 N. Beaton St., will hold its monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. at the post. All members and prospective members are invited to attend. For further information call 903-874-3938 after 2 p.m.

July 7

Piecemakers’ Quilt Guild of Corsicana will meet at the Church of Christ Fellowship Hall, 3400 Highway 22, Corsicana, Texas. Meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. for refreshments and fellowship. Business meeting will start at 10 a.m. Following the meeting there will be a Christmas in July demo and workshop presented by one of the members.  The project for this meeting is a cute Santa Block. To see a sample of the Santa Block, go to the June Show and Tell page of the website. Bring your sewing machine and a sack lunch. This will be a fun and educational meeting if you are interested in learning more about quilting. Visitors are always welcome. The American Legion, Post 22, 632 N. Beaton St., will a BBQ and CASI Chili Cook Off starting at 8 a.m.. at the post. The BBQ contest will include brisket, pork ribs, local chili and beans with trophies awarded for the best tasting entries. The CASI contestants will be competing for points for Terlinqua Cook Off and trophies. For further information call 903-874-3938 after 2 p.m.

  • City cancels ambulance contract with county

    The City of Corsicana has notified Navarro County officials it is cancelling its agreement with the county to provide EMS ambulance service to areas outside the city limits. According to a letter sent to county officials by Corsicana Mayor Chuck McClanahan, ambulance service to county residents will end on Jan. 31, 2015.

    The project to rebuild Seventh Avenue or Highway 31 as it goes through Corsicana is almost over. From an uneven patchwork of paving and pitted concrete, now it’s a smooth ride from Beaton all the way through town.
    It just took an extra year to finish.

    An attempt to bootleg electricity off a pole using jumper cables is believed to have caused a building fire that took out a former restaurant in Angus Friday morning, one of a series of calls to Navarro County Sheriff’s Office to the southern end of the county over the weekend.
