At the Hop! Seniors party down

Music from the ‘50s like “The Twist” was joined with a little big band from the ‘40s, and even Brenda Ballew singing some Doris Day “Que Sera, Sera” Friday evening as the Senior Sock Hop brought out greasers, pink ladies and plenty of smiles.

The Senior Sock Hop, in its third year, was held at the Cook Center, which was transformed for the night into a ‘50s dance hall. The Corsicana Swing Orchestra was in high gear, poodle skirts and ponytails were abundant, and seniors from all walks of life, 50 and up, got out and wore out the dance floor.

“We love putting on the sock hop for our seniors of Navarro County,” said Connie Beal of Navarro Regional Hospital’s Senior Circle. “It is our way of taking them back down memory lane — music of the 50s —  and giving them something to look forward to each year. I am very thankful to be a part of this event.”

Sponsors of the event are NRH Senior Circle, Marsha Thomas Rental Solutions, Family First Hospice, Ennis; Corsicana WalMart Bakery, Sterling House, Twilight Home and Guardian Health Care. All members of the NRH Senior Circle club are included, as well as all residents of Heritage Oaks Retirement Village, Heritage Oaks West, Country Meadows, Sterling House, Twilight Home and TriSun.

“I had one of the residents of Heritage Oaks West approach me last month, and wanted to know if we were going to do the Sock hop again this year,” Beal said. “He had so much fun last year and didn't want to miss it.”

Guests were served flavored popcorn, fancy cupcakes, water and coffee, and door prizes were given out through the evening. Door prizes came from Gypsy Haven, Sheryl May; Pepsi, Vicki Barber-Nerium; Corsicana Merle Norman, Cotton Patch, NRH Senior Circle, Guardian Health Care, Twilight Home, and Gentiva. Kay Cummins photography took portraits for all who wanted them, as photos from the previous year’s event ran on the screens above the room.

Prizes were awarded to Best Dancers Paul and Carol Ann Norman, and Best Dressed went to Freddy and Kathy Melton, couple; and Frances King and Carol King Wansley, mother and daughter.

There were at least two newlywed couples present; Mark and Sue Hill, who sat with Memaw’s Misfits, and Ronnie and Luan Arnett, both of whom wed within the last few weeks.

“Luan and I had a great time at the Sock Hop,” said Ronnie. “This is the first of the old folks sock hops we have attended, but hopefully not the last. The last one was many many years ago.”

“Everyone needs something to look forward to — a night out, a special event — a reason to smile,” Beal said.

“We hope we were able to bring that to them again this year.”
