Deputies bust cockfight operation

Corsicana — Navarro County Sheriff’s deputies raided a cockfighting operation Saturday, seizing animals, cash and guns.

Sheriff Elmer Tanner told the Daily Sun deputies were called to a report of suspicious activity at a home in the 7000 block of NWCR 0060 in Emhouse early Saturday afternoon.

On arrival, deputies discovered the cockfighting taking place and called for backup, provided by additional deputies and Pct. 4 Constable Mike Davis.

Tanner said 15 individuals at the scene were detained by deputies, while another 20 to 25 people fled on foot before backup arrived.

Deputies discovered approximately 10 to 15 deceased animals, and about as many more that were in “various stages of preparation to fight,” Tanner said.

Tanner said the owner of the property was arrested on charges of cruelty to animals, and over 12 citations were issued to spectators at the cockfight.

Deputies also seized several weapons and approximately $7,000 in cash, believed to be prize money in the cockfights.
