Cinco de Mayo parade and party Saturday

Corsicana — A Cinco de Mayo parade and party will take place Saturday, hosted by the Mystic Rose Social Service office in Corsicana. The agency advocates for the elderly and disabled.

The parade will start at 9 a.m., with line–up at 8:30 a.m., according to LaTonya Richardson.

Cars and floats should line-up at the Mystic Rose offices, at 508 N. Main Street, and will go through downtown, but shouldn’t be enough to cause too much traffic trouble. The Corsicana Emergency Corps and police department will handle traffic.

“We’re not closing the streets or anything like that,” said Police Chief Randy Bratton. “It’s going to be a short parade.”

Once back at the offices, there will be a Cinco de Mayo party, with live music, food vendors and merchandise booths, as well as a health care booth offering glucose and blood pressure checks. Some churches will be doing outreach, photos will be taken with the statue of José Navarro on the courthouse lawn, and there will be fingerprinting for children and adults, Richardson said.

“We’re going to have piñatas for the kids to break open, and there will be some activities,” she said. “It’s going to be a nice, fun time.”

Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican national holiday in honor of the 1862 Battle of Puebla, in which an outnumbered, outgunned small force of mestizo and Zapotec fighters defeated French troops who were trying to take over the country and install a puppet monarchy.
